The original Kappy's Coffee Shop was established in 1932 by a German immigrant who ran the business for 27 years and established the name behind Adelaide's highly reputable coffee label.
In 1959 Mr Kappy sold the business to Mr Jerry Schmidt who continued roasting and opened the well-known and highly patronised premises in Stephens Place and later the Heidelberg in Pirie Street.
1992 saw Jonathan & Annette Peters purchase the business and run it as a wholesale enterprise until 1996 when Kappy's and Wright opened at 58 Flinders Street. Kappys has always been known for its quality blends of coffee using only Pure Arabica Beans and only Plantation, Mill AA and Mill A grade coffee. As much of our coffee as possible is now Certified RAIN FOREST ALLIANCE.
All our coffee is roasted at our new warehouse in Compton Street city twice a week to keep it fresh, except for our
Jamaican, Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona ( both certified ) which are roasted on request. We produce nearly 50 different coffees of which 19 are our famous Kappy's Numbered Blends.
In 1996 Kappy's formed a joint venture with D.L.Wright (David) whose family had been growing, manufacturing and blending tea in Ceylon since 1864. In 1960 the plantation was sold but David pursued his family's heritage, first in Africa then Britain.
In 1983 he returned to Adelaide, ( where he was born ) and continued his tea importing and blending business. We import over 160 different teas bringing in excess of 26,000,000 cups of fine leaf tea each year into Australia, for distribution to all states, making us probably the 2nd largest importer of fine leaf tea in the country.
In 1998 J & A Peters bought out David Wrights share of the business with his secret tea blends but respectfully chose to keep the name. The firm specialises in supplying Trade, Wholesale and Retail high quality teas, coffees and herbs plus commercial and domestic machinery, spares and accessories.
In 2002 Kappy's and Craig Lavori jointly opened Kappys Too at the Avenues shopping centre and in 2003, Kappys At The Bay with the Newman family.
In 2005 Kappy's and Wright moved across the road in Flinders Street to No. 53. ( which we no longer have anything to do with ) and then opened our new warehouse at 22 Compton street in 2007.
We have a reputation for and try to only produce the best quality and encourage our customers to sample our products.
